In the Garden of Eve was Filomena Coppola’s first solo exhibition with Dick Bett Gallery in Hobart, Tasmania in 1995. This work represents the beginnings of Coppola’s explorations into her cultural heritage. In this work she literally represents the cultural differences of Australian and Italian. She uses elements of William Morris wallpaper and tapestries to represent the English Colonial History of Australia and the Greco/Roman columns to represent her Italian background. In her work both elements intertwine to symbolically reveal both the difference and similarities of the respective cultures.
