1999 Swoon

Swoon was exhibited at Dick Bett Gallery, Hobart Tasmania in 1999. In this work Coppola explored the relevance of the bolt of fabric that had been woven in Italy for her mother’s dowry in the 1950’s. She had recently brought the fabric to Australia from Italy. The fabric represented her geographical connection to Italy but more importantly for her it was a genealogical connection – as it represented the connection between her grandmother in Italy, her mother’s migration to Australia and her place as the first generation to be born in Australia. In this work fabric becomes the conveyor of emotion and tensional movement.
