String of Pearls was a collection of pastel drawings shown at Dick Bett Gallery, Hobart, Tasmania in 1998. The work brought together a year of travel and research in visual images. Coppola had been awarded the University of Tasmania’s residency at the Cite des Artes in Paris where she spent five months drawing and visiting galleries. After the residency Coppola visited family in Italy where she also set up studio and continued to draw this experience. It was at this time that Coppola discovered a bolt of fabric that has continued to influence her work. Her grandmother had grown the flax, spun it and woven it into a continuous bolt of linen for her mother’s dowry. This fabric had remained in Italy until Coppola brought it with her to Australia in 1997.
